What is KenKen?

KenKen is a mathematical logic puzzle invented by Japanese mathematics teacher Tetsuya Miyamoto in 2004. The name comes from the Japanese word meaning "wisdom squared" — a fitting description for a puzzle that combines arithmetic with logical reasoning.

Like Sudoku, KenKen requires you to fill a grid so that each row and column contains every digit exactly once (1 through N for an N×N grid). But KenKen adds a mathematical twist: cells are grouped into cages marked with a target number and an arithmetic operation (+, −, ×, or ÷). The digits in each cage must produce the target when combined using the specified operation.

What sets KenKen apart from other number puzzles like Kakuro is its unique blend of math skills and logical deduction. Smaller grids (3×3 and 4×4) make excellent introductions for students and kids, while larger grids (7×7 through 9×9) challenge even experienced puzzle solvers.

Our collection features 300 free puzzles across seven grid sizes and four difficulty levels.
